Cheap holiday bargains entice UK consumers

Brits hoping to beat off the winter blues by bagging a holiday bargain have booked early in the January sales.

The latest research by insurance firm Direct Line found that 8.7 million UK adults have already booked their main holiday for 2012.

However, a further 8.9 million have started looking at the deals but have not booked yet.

January sales are not promising for retailers selling clothes and home furnishings. Many Brits hope to take advantage of discount flights and holiday packages allowing them to organise their main holiday early in the year.

Nearly 20% of those who have made plans for their main holiday have already booked either a short haul or long haul travel arrangement.

One in five people are still weighing up the deals on offer.

The 2012 London Olympic Games might have influenced some Brits to either take a ‘stay-cation’ or venture overseas. The research found that only 20% of Londoners weren’t planning to take a main holiday this year as they were hoping to escape the Olympic madness.

However, this attitude varies across the regions as almost half of people living in Wales are planning on not going on a main holiday over the next 12 months.

Over a third of (37%) residents in the North East are also planning to give up their main holiday this year.

If money matters are a pressing issue when it comes to going on holiday, you could easily manage a suitable budget with a prepaid credit card.

They work much like a pay-as-you-go mobile phone top up card, whereby you put cash on the card and once it runs out you cannot spend anymore.

The Orange prepaid credit card is an ideal choice for going on holiday as it allows you to withdraw cash from ATM machines with a transaction fee of just 2.75%.
