Gambling using Prepaid MasterCard
Can I use Prepaid Cards for Online Gambling?
We frequently receive e-mails from consumers asking if prepaid credit cards can be used on online gambling sites.
Many of the prepaid credit cards available in the UK do have gambling or “Adult content” merchant restrictions. This is primarily as a number of the cards are available to persons under the age of 18.
However, some full branded MasterCards, such as Splash do allow their products to be used, and they are accepted for online gambling.
Prepaid cards can only be used to transact up to the value of money pre-loaded onto the card. This allows consumers to better control the amount of money being spent to fund online gambling and betting.
It can enforce responsible spending, and allows consumers to preload a prepaid MasterCard with a fixed amount of funds each month or week. Once the cards balance has reached zero, no further gambling can take place.
It’s your money, so you are not in debt, and are not subject to high amounts of interest that would have been payable if a traditional Credit Card had been used.
As many as 5.8 million people a month visited online gambling sites from April to September 2006, according to figures seen by Panorama.
